China’s First Copyright Infringement Jail Term

April 28th, 2008

Xinhua News Agency said Zhou Cheng, 40, was jailed for one year and fined about $1,430 by the Chaoyang District People’s Court on Friday.

Cheng had been selling DVDs from his shop in Chaoyang for $2.15 each and upon his arrest was found with nearly 11,000 DVDs in his possession.  Pirated DVDs are extremely common throughout China and this is one of the first cases in which sellers have been prosecuted to such an extent.
